Here’s How to Protect Yourself from the Flu

Here’s How to Protect Yourself from the Flu

We may still have soaring summer temperatures, but the new school year is gearing up. That means fall is right around the corner, and with the cooler temperatures of autumn comes the start of this year’s influenza season.

At Integrative Primary Care in Katy, Texas, our experienced providers offer specialized flu care for sick patients in the Houston area. We also believe in the power of prevention. That’s why we recommend getting your annual flu vaccine and other preventive strategies.

To help keep you and your family as healthy as possible this flu season, take a moment to read our top tips on protecting yourself from the flu this fall.

1. Get your flu shot early!

Did you know it takes about two weeks for your body to make the antibodies needed to keep you safe from the flu virus after you’ve been vaccinated? By getting your flu shot early — no later than September or October — you get the best protection against the flu, which typically peaks in winter.

Because new influenza strains come out each year, you need to get a new flu shot every year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends each person 6 months and older get vaccinated against the flu every season.

At Integrative Primary Care, we offer both nasal and injectable flu vaccines to make it as easy as possible to get immunized. Talk to your provider to learn which type is right for you.

2. Wash your hands frequently

Like many viruses, the flu can live on surfaces for some time before dying. This means that when you touch a surface with the virus, then touch your body, it can enter your body through your mouth, nose, eyes, and other openings.

To protect yourself and others from the flu, wash your hands frequently with hot, soapy water. If you can’t wash your hands, be sure to use hand sanitizer for protection. You can also minimize your risk by cleaning frequently touched surfaces and objects with cleaning spray or sanitizing wipes.

3. Cover up and keep your distance

Since the flu and other upper respiratory viruses spread through the droplets released when people sneeze or cough, you can protect yourself from the virus by covering up your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough.

You can also lower your risk of getting the flu by wearing a mask, and, if possible, keeping your distance from others in crowded places. Doing these things can also help you avoid getting other viral infections, such as the common cold and COVID-19.

4. Bolster your immune system

Your immune system has a big role to play when it comes to protecting you from the flu. By strengthening your immune system, you’re better able to fight off the flu and other viral infections. And, if you get the flu, having a strong immune system may help shorten its duration and minimize your symptoms.

You can bolster your immune system by getting plenty of sleep, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and veggies, and limiting your intake of processed foods, sugar, and high-fat foods.
